Exterior Door Buying Guide & Frequently Asked Questions:
Highline stocks a huge inventory of pre-hung exterior doors in fiberglass, iron, and mahogany, including fire-rated house-to-garage doors. Based in DFW, we deliver across Texas in 1-2 days for builders, contractors, remodelers and homeowners.

1. Choosing the Right Exterior Door Material?
A. Fiberglass is a dent-resistant, energy-efficient front door material that holds paint or stain through Texas heat and humidity for decades with minimal upkeep. Iron delivers a heavy-gauge, high-security entry with the bold, custom look only wrought iron provides. Mahogany brings the warmth of a premium natural hardwood front door, naturally resistant to warping and decay for lasting curb appeal. For house-to-garage connections, steel delivers maximum security and fire rating, while vinyl and aluminum power low-maintenance patio and sliding glass door systems not front doors.

 2. Choosing the Right Exterior Door Type?
A.  Front Door covers standard single and double entry configurations. House to Garage Door connects an attached garage to the home and often must meet fire-rating code. Sliding Patio Door and French/Double Door both open onto a patio or backyard - sliding for a space-saving glide, French/Double for a wider, symmetrical opening. Pivot Door swings on a center pin instead of side hinges for oversized, modern entries. Mini Blind/Patio doors have built-in blinds between the glass for privacy without curtains.

3. Choosing the Right Exterior Door Width and Height (Size)?
A. We stock nine standard widths, each suited to a specific door configuration:

  • 2'8" (32") — single front door
  • 3'0" (36") — single front door; sidelite configurations bring the total assembled unit up to 64" wide for extra natural light at the entry
  • 5'0" (60") — sliding patio door, starting width or double french door
  • 6'0" (72") — standard double door or sliding patio door
  • 8'0" (96") — wide sliding patio door
  • 9'0" (108") — wide sliding patio door
  • 10'0" (120") — extra-wide sliding or multi-panel patio door
  • 12'0" (144") — extra-wide sliding or multi-panel patio door
  • 16'0" (192") — widest sliding patio door, built for expansive backyard or patio openings
  • We stock three standard heights — 6'8" (80"), 8'0" (96"), and 9'0" (108") with taller 8' and 9' doors increasingly common in newer construction for a more dramatic entry. Confirm your rough opening height before ordering.
  • Need a width outside these nine? We handle custom and special-order sizes - contact our team to confirm availability and lead time.

4. Choosing the Right Swing?
A. Exterior doors come in four swing options: Left Hand Inswing, Right Hand Inswing, Left Hand Outswing, and Right Hand Outswing. Inswing opens into the home and is standard for most front entries; outswing opens outward and suits garages or specific code situations. To confirm handing, stand outside facing the door hinges on your left mean left-hand, on your right mean right-hand.

5. What's the difference between a Front Door and a House to Garage Door?
A. A Front Door is built and finished for a home's main entry. A House to Garage Door connects an attached garage to living space and often must meet local fire-rating code.

6. Sliding Patio Door vs. French/Double Door - which should I choose?
A. Sliding doors glide on a track and save floor space, good for smaller patios. French/Double doors swing open from the center for a wider, more traditional opening where you have the clearance.

7. What is a Pivot Door?
A. A Pivot Door swings on a center pin near the top and bottom of the frame instead of side hinges, which allows for oversized, heavier doors and a distinctive modern entry.

8. What's the difference between inswing and outswing, and how do I know my handing?
A. Most exterior doors open inward for security, an inswing door's hinges sit on the inside of the frame, making it harder for someone outside to remove the hinge pins and force entry. Outswing is more common for garages or specific code situations. To check handing, stand outside facing the door hinges on the left mean left-hand, hinges on the right mean right-hand.

9. Do you carry fire-rated house-to-garage doors?
A. Yes our House to Garage Fire Rated Wood option meets the fire-separation requirement between an attached garage and living space; check your local code for the exact rating required.

10. Do exterior doors come with a warranty?
A. Yes every door we sell carries the manufacturer's own warranty, which varies by brand and material. See our Manufacturers Warranties page for the specific documents and coverage details.

11. How fast can I get an exterior door delivered in Texas?
A. In-stock pre-hung doors typically deliver within 1-2 business days from our DFW warehouse across Texas. Special orders take longer, with a confirmed date provided before you order.

12. Can contractors get wholesale pricing on exterior doors?

A. Yes - create a free account for trade pricing, saved quotes, and order tracking, or contact our team directly for volume project pricing.
