-How to Choose the Right Interior Door?

Core Type

  • Hollow core — lightweight and budget-friendly, standard for closets and low-traffic interior doors.
  • Solid core — heavier, quieter, and more durable; commonly used for bedrooms, home offices, and house-to-garage openings where sound or fire separation matters.
  • Glass panel — for pantries, home offices, and interior spaces where you want light to pass through while still closing off the room.

Door Type / Operation Consider the space before the style: bypass and bi-fold doors work well for closets where you don't want a door swinging into the room; pocket doors save floor space entirely but require a clear wall cavity; single and double pre-hung doors are the standard choice for bedrooms, bathrooms, and offices.

Style Shaker (1, 2, or 5-panel) is the most common modern/transitional look; Rockport 5-panel molded gives a more traditional profile at a similar price point. Match the style already used elsewhere in the home for a consistent look room to room.

FAQs:

Q. What's the difference between hollow-core and solid-core interior doors?
A. Hollow-core doors have a cardboard or lightweight lattice interior, making them cheaper and easier to hang but less effective at blocking sound. Solid-core doors are filled with wood composite, adding weight, sound dampening, and durability — worth the upgrade for bedrooms and home offices.

Q. What's the standard width for a closet door? ?
A.  Standard closet openings typically run 2'4" to 6'0" wide depending on the closet type - bi-fold and bypass doors are commonly sized at 4'0", 5'0", or 6'0" for reach-in and wide closets, while single doors as narrow as 1'6" to 2'4" are used for smaller linen or utility closets.

Q. Bifold vs. bypass doors - which is better for a closet?
A. Bi-fold doors fold open and give you full access to the closet opening at once, but need clearance in front to swing. Bypass (sliding) doors don't need floor clearance but only expose about half the closet opening at a time. Choose bi-fold for full access, bypass for tight room layouts.

Q. Do pocket doors need special wall framing?
A. Yes, a pocket door slides into a cavity built inside the wall, so the wall needs to be free of plumbing, electrical, and structural framing at that location. This is easiest to plan during new construction or a full remodel rather than retrofitting an existing finished wall.

Q. What's the difference between a prehung and slab interior door?
A. A slab door is the panel only, with no frame or hinges used to replace a door where the existing frame is square and undamaged. A prehung door includes the frame, hinges, and often the strike plate, and is the standard choice for new openings or replacing a damaged frame.

Q. Does a house-to-garage interior door need to be solid core?
A.  In most jurisdictions, yes, codes generally require a solid-core (or fire-rated) door between an attached garage and living space to slow the spread of fire and fumes. Check your local building code for the exact rating required in your area.

Q. What's the difference between Shaker and molded panel doors?
A. Shaker doors have flat, recessed panels with clean, square lines for a modern or transitional look. Molded panel doors (like our Rockport 5-panel) have a raised, contoured panel profile for a more traditional, classic appearance.

Q. What's the standard height for interior doors?
A.  6'8" (80 inches) is the standard height for most U.S. interior doors. 8'0" (96 inches) doors are increasingly common in newer construction and higher-ceiling homes for a taller, more modern look.
